Completing College:

The Census Bureau reports that only 1 in 3 people in their mid-twenties that have dropped out of college actually return to school.

Stay in school. I know you want to have fun and start living your life, but believe me, before too long you will be looking back wondering what you could have done different or better in your lives. If you drop out of college now, this will be one of your biggest regrets!

According to a US Department of Education study of college students entering two year institutions in 1995 –

Only 38.4% finished their degrees by 2001

16.4% were still working on their degrees 6 years later.

45.2% dropped out of college – That’s almost half!

The statistics are even more bleak concerning blacks and Hispanics.

Reasons People Use for Not Finishing College.

  • Have or want to work – Distance Learning - Internet
  • Lack of Funding – Grants, loans, scholarships. Especially for minorities and those with disabilities. The act is, if you want to go to college there is money out there to be had. It’s up to you apply for it and use it wisely once obtaining it.
  • Burn Out – Take classes that interest you, budget your time wisely so you can have off days from school.
  • Poor grades – Poor study habits – Try harder – Your paying for this and you’re here by choice, you may as well make the best of it.
  • Got married or had a child. –If your married both of you can take classes together. Scale back and just take 1 or 2 classes a semester. You will be setting a better example for your children if you finish college. According to a National Center for Educational Statistics survey completed in 1999, 82% of students whose parents held a bachelor’s degree or higher enrolled in college immediately after high school.
  • Better chance of getting hired – I know from experience that you are more likely to get hired at any job. I always thought that experience should be the determining factor. Finishing college says something about a person’s discipline and determination.
